In the City of Los Angeles, a new or replacement system needs a mechanical permit from the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) and must meet Title 24. How much does AC repair cost?
A diagnostic visit is $75, or $149 outside business hours, and the $75 fee is credited toward a repair approved during the same visit. You get the repair price in writing before any work begins. Typical ranges are on our AC repair page.
How often should an air conditioner be maintained?
Once a year is the minimum for most systems. Schedule it in the spring, before summer demand peaks.
Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?
If the system is over 10 to 12 years old and the repair cost is close to half the price of a new system, replacement usually makes more sense. For newer systems or minor issues, a repair is usually the right call.
Do I need a permit to replace an air conditioner in Los Angeles?
Yes. In the City of Los Angeles a new or replacement system needs a mechanical permit from LADBS and must meet Title 24. We handle the permit, the inspection and the HERS verification.
