Whole-Home Daikin Heat Pump and Garage Mini-Split Installation in Sierra Madre

A planned HVAC replacement became a full comfort redesign with a 4-ton Daikin inverter heat pump, new R8 ductwork, room-by-room Manual J sizing, and a dedicated dual-zone mini-split for a detached garage office.

Project Overview

Designed around the actual house, not just the old equipment size

This Sierra Madre project started as a planned equipment replacement, but the design process showed that a simple one-for-one swap would not solve the real comfort and efficiency issues. The homeowner needed dependable comfort in the main house and proper conditioning for a detached garage used as a daily home office.

Cold Cloud Mechanical treated the property as two separate comfort problems. The main house received a Manual J-based system design, a new Daikin inverter heat pump, a variable-speed air handler, and a complete R8 ductwork replacement. The garage office received its own Daikin dual-zone mini-split with two wall-mounted indoor units and independent thermostats.

Why the scope changed from replacement to full redesign

During the design phase, two major issues became clear. The existing ductwork was insulated to R4, which was not a smart match for the home’s current efficiency goals. The garage also had no real conditioning, even though it was being used every day as an office.

01

Old ductwork was holding the system back

Reusing the old R4 duct runs would have limited the benefit of the new equipment. Once the energy impact was modeled, replacing the duct system with R8 insulated ductwork became the better long-term solution.

02

The garage office needed its own solution

Instead of trying to push conditioned air from the main system into a detached structure, the garage office received a dedicated Daikin dual-zone mini-split designed around the actual load of each zone.

Scope of Work

What Cold Cloud Mechanical completed

The project included load modeling, equipment removal, new ductwork, refrigerant commissioning, garage zoning, electrical updates, indoor air quality upgrades, and a final homeowner walkthrough.

  • 3D scan of the main house and full Manual J room-by-room load calculation to define BTU and CFM targets.
  • Removal and disposal of the existing main house split system, old line sets, and outdated ductwork.
  • Installation of a 4-ton Daikin inverter heat pump condenser on a level composite pad with anti-vibration isolation.
  • Installation of a matched Daikin variable-speed ECM air handler with new emergency drain pan and float switch.
  • Complete duct replacement using R8 insulated duct, proper hangers, sealed plenum connections, and a straight return section for better airflow stability.
  • Relocation of the primary bedroom supply register away from over the bed and closer to the window, including patch and finish of the original opening.
  • Manual balancing dampers added at branch takeoffs, followed by full system air balancing to design CFM values.
  • Refrigerant circuit brazed under nitrogen purge, pressure tested, and triple-evacuated to under 500 microns.
  • Installation of a Daikin two-zone mini-split serving the detached garage office with two wall-mounted indoor units.
  • Wall-mounted thermostats installed for each garage zone for independent room control.
  • Daikin smart thermostat installed in the main house with a remote bedroom sensor for better overnight comfort.
  • Whole-home air cleaner installed in the main house return.
  • New disconnects, conduit runs, and breaker work completed to current California code.
  • Full commissioning, airflow verification, system testing, and homeowner walkthrough.
Equipment Installed

Daikin equipment, R8 ductwork, and dedicated zoning

The final setup gives the main house and detached garage office their own properly matched systems, instead of forcing one piece of equipment to solve two very different comfort problems.

Why It Matters

Better comfort for a foothill home with real room-by-room temperature swings

Sierra Madre sits close to the foothills, where afternoon sun and cooler nights can create noticeable temperature differences from room to room. A system sized only by old equipment labels or broad averages can easily miss those details.

More stable main-house comfort

Room-by-room load calculations and a properly sized inverter heat pump help the system run quieter, ramp less aggressively, and hold target temperatures with smaller swings.

Improved overnight control

The remote bedroom sensor allows the system to target the sleeping area instead of simply reacting to hallway air, which is especially useful during overnight operation.

Independent garage office zoning

The garage office now runs on its own dual-zone mini-split, so the homeowner is not wasting energy trying to condition a detached workspace through the main house system.

Planning a heat pump, ductwork, or mini-split upgrade?

Cold Cloud Mechanical designs HVAC systems around the real load of the home, the way each room is used, and the comfort problems the old system could not solve.
